Heikki Hyötyniemi, HUT Professor
Inaugural Lecture - March 12, 2002
Research Topic:
Complex Systems - Modeling, Simulation, and Control
The inaugural lecture discusses complex systems and how the new approaches
may open new horizons in different branches of scientific research. Studying emergent phenomena rather than
the low-level component functions may help to see fresh perspectives. The presentation
first concentrates on the promises and experiences (disappointments!)
encountered in the field of chaos theory - the main problem there is the lack
of substance. After this, a closer analysis of a special class of emergent
processes is studied: It turns out that one can explicitly tailor simple
functions to accomplish any special tasks. What is more, it is shown how
this same structure can be claimed to have some real relevance - at least in special cases (when
modeling mental functions) there is also some fundamental, intuitive plausibility in the model.
